Zero. The number of the beginning and the end. The moment I came in here, everything's been set back to zero.

—Hanna Yoo

"Always read your Contracts carefully" is the second episode of Zero Game released by Zelbasen. Upon entering Zero Game, Hanna encounters Alex Baek, a veteran player who offers to pair with her.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Mr. X playing a game of Jenga. Rita, a Third Level NPC, walks in, giving him a monthly report of the top five ranking participants in the starting zone. From fifth place to first are Perry Joo, Alex Baek, Loveme, Jay, and Elliot Baek. Mr. X notes that although the list has been unchanged for six months, a new factor may shake up the rankings.

Ep1 02

At the Collapsed Cathedral, Alex explains the concept of Life points, NPCs, and the end of Zero Game. The player who wins Zero Game gets to meet the Operator and reset their life; the other players most likely die. Because of the nature of a survival game, Alex warns Hanna not to trust others. He claims he is only helping her because he does not wish to win. As they head toward the Neutral Zone, where PVP is prohibited, Alex begins to feel anemic. Concerned, Hanna offers to help, and Alex proposes the idea of the Pair System, which would bind the two of them together. Hanna agrees to a temporary partnership, which allows a chance of deactivation later. Once the contract is signed, Alex drops his "nice guy" facade and jeers at Hanna. He explains that if a player dies while paired, their partner receives all of the remaining Life, giving veteran players with more knowledge the advantage over new players. Alex attempts to deliver a fatal blow to Hanna, but is injured by his own attack instead. Affronted, Hanna reveals her passive skill, Mirroring, which reflects opposing attacks against her opponents. She points out that if Alex really does not care about winning, he won't have survived this long in the game. She takes his Electric Staff and leaves Alex, presumably dead, on the cathedral floor. With newfound information, Hanna sets off to the Neutral Zone alone, intent on winning the game and bringing back her deceased parents.

Back in the cathedral, Alex's wounds begin to quickly heal. He sits up and observes the card he took from Hanna earlier, which has Hanna's passive ability explained on it. Impressed by her quick wit and survival instinct, he muses out loud that he looks forward to being paired in the future. The episode ends with Elliot Baek, Alex's older brother, and Perry Joo sitting on the ledge of a high building, observing Hanna.
